We chose the tracks over air travel, enjoying ever-changing landscapes and the rhythmic clatter of wheels. Our latest train trip proved that the journey itself can be just as fascinating as the destinations.
Our first major stop was sunny Spain. We embraced the local rhythm of life, wandering through historic streets and discovering the country's diverse facets:
Girona: It captivated us with its monumental cathedral, charming Old Town, and atmospheric bridges spanning the Onyar River.
Zaragoza: It made a huge impression on us with the imposing Basilica del Pilar and its unique blend of Arab and Christian cultures. Barcelona: The vibrant capital of Catalonia offered a wide array of experiences—from the breathtaking Sagrada Família and the iconic Camp Nou to a local market bursting with color and aroma. We strolled along the famous La Rambla but also ventured into less touristy alleys to soak up the city's authentic local atmosphere.
We didn't slow down on the way back, either. We stopped in the French city of
Dijon, where we followed the "Owl Trail" and sampled local mustard, before finally visiting
Luxembourg—an intimate capital city filled with mighty fortifications, picturesque gorges, and postcard-perfect views.
The trip was brilliant, though it required quite a bit of logistical planning. Traveling by train across so many borders is a real test of organizational skills, the ability to coordinate connections, and ironclad budgetary discipline. Pulling it all together and staying within the planned budget brought immense satisfaction.
